The blessed, sacred peninsula of Athos
is where monasticism was established
thanks to the special attributes of its natural
setting; a lengthy “isolated” piece of land
that spreads into the Aegean Sea as it
escalates up to 2,033 m. of altitude. The
immaculate nature with its virgin forests
and the massive mountains are prevalent
on its 336 sq. km., whereas the signs of
human faith –churches, monasteries, cells
and hermitages– are dispersed all over
the area. Very few are the photographers
who have captured the unique beauty of
Aghion Oros as Giorgos Poupis has, since
he had been constantly visiting this sacred
land over the last 40 years. The exhibition
“Crosses of Aghion Oros”, presented by
the Mount Athos Center from June 5th
to September 16th, along with the photo
album provided, will present the sacred
symbol of Christianity in all its aspects
and from all the monasteries of Mount
Athos, as illustrated by the renowned
photographer.
As stated by the photographer himself
in the album introduction, “whether
on domes or ancient walls, fences and
sanctuaries or trees, rocks and other built
monuments, crosses allude to the shiny
truth of the immaterial essence. This is
what I wanted to praise through my art, as
well as to successfully communicate what
they transferred in my soul. I humbly kneel
before their Grace”.

ιδιορρυθμίας του φυσικού περιβάλλοντός
της: ένα επίμηκες, «απομονωμένο»
κομμάτι γης, που εισχωρεί στο Αιγαίο
εκτινάσσοντας το ύψος του κλιμακωτά
στα 2.033 μέτρα στο νότιο άκρο
